Great Barrier Reef, Rainforest & Sydney [L25]

Ayers Rock, Northern Territory, Australia 21 Days / 19 Nights - Brisbane, Great Barrier Reef, Rainforest, Sydney, The Outback, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania

Arrive in Brisbane, it has several interesting districts, a good street cafe scene, a great riverside park, a busy cultural calendar and a thriving nightlife. Known locally as Bris Vegas, Brisbane is renowned for its sun and the brash, glitzy hordes that follow it, but it's also a thriving arts capital, with dozens of theatres, cinemas, concert halls, galleries and museums.

Next on to the Great Barrier Reef Island, a true coral cay right on the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef. Here you can swim straight off the beach to an endless garden of coral where the waters are literally teeming with beautifully coloured fish and marine life. It's what you don't see around the island that makes the resort so special. You won't see any buildings above the tree line. The reef experience is exclusively for guests, a unique experience few other resorts in the world can offer.

Then to the Rainforest Resort, which is located in World Heritage Lamington National Park 2 hours by road south of Brisbane and 1 1/2 hours by road west of the Gold Coast. Lamington National Park is home to a vast array of unique flora and fauna. Pademelons, gliders and possums, frogs and the amazing array of birdlife makes the retreat a nature lover's paradise. The Rainforest Retreat is 930 metres (3,000 feet) above sea level and enjoys cool mountain air (for cooler days and nights in summer) and has spectacular views which go forever.

Travel to Sydney, Australia's oldest city, the economic powerhouse of the nation and the country's capital in everything but name. Sydney is blessed with sun-drenched natural attractions, dizzy skyscrapers, delicious and daring restaurants, superb shopping and friendly folk. Bursting with character, Sydney is a vibrant city catering to all your desires whether you seek exhilaration and exploration or 100% relaxation.

Ayers Rock has acquired its reputation not just because it is such a unique landform, but also because of the effect the sun has on its colours and appearance. Sunrises and Sunsets cause changes to its colour from browns though oranges, reds to finally grey. The best colour effects occur on overcast days. Additionally the sun casts shadows off the larger and smaller gaps on the rock face which incredibly changes its look almost by the minute.

Then to Alice Springs, it is Australia's most inland town, sitting around 200km south of the absolute centre of the continent. Alice Springs was established, under the original name of Stewart, as a telegraph station - linking Adelaide and Darwin. A century later it is still a communications and commerce hub, and is now home to a population of approximately 28,000 people.

Travel to Adelaide, an elegant city that has preserved its heritage and links with the past and offers a wealth of tourism experiences that are readily accessible from the city. Adelaide is not only South Australia's premier tourist destination but also a true gateway to the many other tourist regions within the state. The food and wine experience starts right in the city centre with the National Wine Centre, Adelaide Central Market, vibrant cafes, restaurants boasting some of Australia's best chefs and events such as Tasting Australia.

Kangaroo Island is an island seven times the size of Singapore, literally crawling with wildlife. The koalas aren't being cuddled - they're relaxing at home in native trees. The seals aren't performing - they're lazing beside you on the beach. There are echidnas, platypi, goannas, wallabies and kangaroos. All thriving. All mesmerising. And, of course, there's the wine and food. Take a drive and collect wine, cheeses, oysters and lobsters and indulge on a secluded beach.

Last stop is Tasmania, it is an island roughly the size of West Virginia, located 240 km off the south-east corner of mainland Australia. Next stop south is Antarctica, 2000 km away. Tasmania is a natural island - a land of dramatic coastlines, rugged mountains, tall forests and sparkling highland lakes. Over a third of the state is reserved in a network of National Parks and the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, a refuge and habitat for rare plants and animals, including survivors of the ancient southern super continent, Gondwana.
