Australian Outback & Great Barrier Reef [CU16]



Live Aboard Dive Experience, Queensland, Australia Ayers Rock, Australia This itinerary was tailored for adventure seekers who wanted to experience the Australian Outback and the Great Barrier Reef in a manner that was off the beaten track. The vacation included the highlights of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Great Ocean Road, Great Barrier Reef (liveaboard), Coober Pedy Mail Run (opal mining town), and the Ghan Train Adventure through the heart of Central Australia.

Sydney is Australia's oldest city, the economic powerhouse of the nation and the country's capital in everything but name. It's blessed with sun-drenched natural attractions, dizzy skyscrapers, delicious and daring restaurants, superb shopping and friendly folk. Then on to Melbourne; a city where cultural pursuits are woven into the fabric of everyday life. Regional Victoria also boasts a flourishing arts scene, with impressive galleries, museums, and heritage buildings. Then travel one of the world's most scenic roads through an extended area that includes the world-famous Twelve Apostles, the Otways rainforest, Bells Beach, on the Surf Coast, and the Great Ocean Road itself. After your self-drive, arrive in Adelaide; an elegant city that has preserved its heritage, links with the past, and offers a wealth of tourism experiences that are readily accessible from the city.

Set off for your trip into the outback. Your first stop is Coober Pedy; known as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Next board The Ghan for a scenic train ride to Alice Springs & Ayers Rock for your outback adventure.

Next your trip takes you to tropical north Queensland. Your first stop is Cairns; a modern, sophisticated city, offering access to World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef and islands, rainforests and the Australia Outback. Cairns presents a comfortable blend of traditional and modern designs. Then join a live aboard dive boat for a 4 day /4 night dive adventure offers a tantalizing taste of both the Ribbon Reefs and the Coral Sea. Commencing with the scenic reef flight, you will be delivered to the boat at Lizard Island to start your diving at sites such as the Cod Hole, before overnight travel to the spectacular Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea. End your trip in Brisbane, a city which was once described a big country town has now emerged as one of the country's most progressive centres. Brisbane has several interesting districts, a good street cafe scene, a great riverside park, a busy cultural calendar and a thriving nightlife.

(Day 1): International Departure (Not Included)
From USA to AustraliaAfter departing from Los Angeles, you will be provided with an evening meal, you can relax, have a drink, watch a movie and rest. You will be given Breakfast before landing in Sydney, Australia. (You lose one day crossing the International Date Line but don't worry you catch it up again on your return flight to the USA)

The Qantas Boeing 747-400 is equipped with the latest entertainment features of any Airline. The overnight flight to Australia can be a good opportunity for sleeping or to watch the latest movies after your evening meal.
(Day 2) - Shuttle Transfer from Sydney Airport to Accommodation

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Business District, this unique village features a centre with more than 70 shops, boutiques and galleries with everything from hand-made puppets, vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, art supplies, jewelry and some of Australia's finest arts and crafts.

If hunger takes over there are a myriad of places to eat, from some of the finest restaurants to quaint cafes and casual eateries with many offering stunning views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. If quenching a thirst is what you're after don't forget to stop off at one of the 13 Heritage pubs serving local wines and beers!

On Saturdays and Sundays, be sure to check out the market held at the northern end of George Street. Perfect for gifts and souvenir shopping, it has more than 150 stalls selling quality crafts, home wares, jewelry and Australian-designed goods, all under a unique sail-like canopy.

With the transport to The Rocks serviced by the Explorer and just a five minute walk from the Circle Quay is it easy to get here. The Sydney Visitors Centre on the corner of Argyle & Playfair Streets at The Rocks: open 9.30am - 5.30pm every day of the year (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). Your 4 Star vacation accommodation is located in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. Its suites are equipped with kitchenettes, air conditioning, and ensuite bathrooms. Most are facing on to the hotel's private European style courtyard. The vacation accommodation is close to Chinatown. Or perhaps stroll to the Southern Cross Station and travel by tram throughout the city. For the less adventurous, Melbourne is the perfect launching pad for day tours to such places like Phillip Island and Penguins, or perhaps the Great Ocean Road.
(Day 5) - Day Tour: Phillip Island Penguin Parade
Phillip Island, Melbourne, AustraliaPhillip Island is home to an astounding array of wildlife, including Australia's largest fur seal colony, the little penguins and cuddly koalas. Enjoy getting close to koalas and kangaroos before joining the little penguins at dusk, as they emerge from the surf and waddle to their burrows.

In the afternoon visit Warrook Farm, a working cattle property, and enjoy the opportunity to feed kangaroos. Then at Phillip Island visit the Koala Conservation Centre and observe cuddly koalas. View Nobbies and Australia's largest seal population. See the seaside town of Cowes and the Visitors Information Centre. At dusk, enjoy the 'little penguin parade' and see penguins make their way to their dune burrows (no flash cameras allowed during the parade).
(Day 6) - Day Tour: Dandenong Ranges & Wines

Ride the Puffing Billy Steam Train through lush forests before sampling traditional Australian billy tea and lamington cakes. In the Yarra Valley enjoy wine tasting and the company of local winemakers at Fergusson's Winery. After lunch (including lunch, vegetarian available) continue on to visit two more vineyards, Domaine Chandon and Rockford's Eyton for further wine-tastings and a winery tour.
(Day 7) - Self-Drive of Great Ocean Road

Take the opportunity to explore parts of Australia in and around your vacation town. Please bring a valid American driver's license with you and be aware that the Australia drives on the left hand side of the road. For more information, you can obtain Australian Street Maps from www.whereis.com.au.
(Days 7 to 10): Great Ocean Road (Self-Drive Tour)

DAY 1: GREAT OCEAN ROAD SELF DRIVE TOUR
Today collect your hire car and start your self drive tour of the Great Ocean Road. Pass through Geelong and maybe stop at Torquay for refreshments. Enjoy views of sweeping beaches, sleepy coastal resorts and spectacular cliffsides as you wind along the coastline road. Stop at Apollo Bay for your overnight accommodation with the afternoon at leisure.

Insider's Tip: Geelong & Great Ocean Road Information Centre - There are 12 Accreditied Visitor Information Centres along Great Ocean Road. The Geelong Centre (on the outskirts of town on Princess Highway) is a great place to stop for everything you need for the GOR region. Stop by to pick up maps, vistors' guides, magazines or tips from the knowledgeable locals. (All visitor information centres are open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm)

DAY 2: THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD.
Continue along the road to Otway National Park, an abundance of ferns and mosses dwarfed by giant gum trees. Continue towards Port Campbell National Park. View the famous Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard. Stop in Port Campbell for refreshments and continue to the remnants of London Bridge. Continue on to Portland and stay overnight in Mount Gambier (South Australia). View Mt Gambier's Blue Lake, famous for its vivid blue colour during summer months.

DAY 3: THE RIVERLAND
From Mt Gambier continue onto Tailem Bend and see Old Tailem Town a re-creation of a pioneer village with many old buildings. Continue to Murray Bridge and drive across the Might Murray River. You may like to spend the night here in the Riverland at (or near) Murray Bridge. This town is South Australia’s largest riverside town with a population of 13,500. It’s a popular place for fishing, waterskiing and outdoor riverside barbecues. Maybe take a lunchtime river cruise and explore the Murray on the MV Barrangul or PS Captain Proud, check at the local tourist office on South Terrace for times. Overnight.

DAY 4: ADELAIDE
Continue to Adelaide through Mt Barker and the Adelaide Hills. While in the Adelaide Hills you may like to see Hahndorf a quaint old German-style town that has shady main street housing a delightful assortment of art and craft shops. In Adelaide maybe do a city tour and revel in the beauty of Adelaide (the city of Churches). In the evenings, enjoy some of the terrific restaurants, Rundle Street or maybe a theatre show at the Festival Theatre. During the day maybe see Waterfall Gulley, Glenelg (seaside shops and amusements) or take a day tour to the Barossa or McLaren Vale, Australia’s premier wine producing regions.

(Day 10 to 11): 1 Nights Accommodation in Adelaide

Your 4 Star vacation accommodation is conveniently situated in the heart of Adelaide, the wine capital of Australia. Each room is equipped with air conditioning, cable TV, ensuite bathroom, free coffee/tea making facility, and hair dryer in room. Take a stroll to Rundle Street East with its many cafes and bars, or visit the popular dining precinct of Gouger Street. All are within walking distance to your vacation accommodation. Adelaide offers a relaxed yet sophisticated city environment. Travel to Kangaroo Island or visit the Barossa Valley and its wineries.
(Day 11): Domestic Flight from Adelaide to Coober Pedy

(Days 11 to 14): 3 Nights Accommodation in Coober Pedy

Your vacation accommodation is located in Coober Pedy, the Opal Capital. The town has evolved into one of the most unique places in Australia. A desert town with a population of 3,500, Coober Pedy is probably best known for its unique style of underground living (where it is cooler). Explore the authentic underground homes, museums, potteries, opal shops, art gallery and, of course, opal mines. Travel by 4WD to Lake Eyre, the Painted Desert, Opal Mines, and cattle stations (ranches) or participate in a Camel Safari.
(Day 13) - Day Tour (Thursdays only): Coober Pedy Mail Run
Travel with the Coober Pedy (often mis-spelt as Cooper Pedy) mailman delivering mail to the historic outback towns of Oodnadatta and William Creek as well as remote cattle stations (known as ranches in the USA) including the world’s largest, "Anna Creek".

The tour travels over diverse country, including gibber plains, red sand hills, and the 120 million year old ancient in-land seabed. Stop at a town called Oodnadatta, an out-post that became a thriving railway town when the transcontinental railway reached there in 1891. Famous for its teams of Afghan Cameleers who loaded mail, freight and travellers for transportation further north to places like Alice Springs. At William Creek you can have a drink at the unique outback-bush pub or at the Dingo Café with its memorabilia and old photos of the area. This once important railway town is known for having Australia’s first solar powered telephone (the towns population is smaller that it’s nearest neighbour Anna Creek Cattle Station). Also go through the world’s longest man-made structure, the Dingo fence. Stop and see the old Ghan Railway Line while travelling up the famous Oodnadatta track. This track follows the old Aboriginal trade route and the footsteps of explore’s like John McDouall Stuart, as well as the historic Overland Telegraph Line. Learn about Lake Eyre and the Great Artesian Basin, the arid land pastoral industry, the famous Afghan Camel Drivers, outback fauna and flora, Aboriginal heritage and early pioneers of the area. The mailmen, are experience outback operators, that have lived and worked in the area for most of their lives and are well known to the locals and conduct this run twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays only).

Please note: This is an official Australia Post contract and while there is a timetable it is somewhat flexible, allowing stops for photos and short walks at points of interest as time allows.

For an additional charge, there is also the opportunity to leave the Mail Run at either Peake Station or William Creek and do a 1 or 2 hour flight over Lake Eyre, then rejoin the Mail Run further down the track.

The Mail Run leaves from the Underground Bookshop in Coober Pedy on Mondays and Thursdays mornings. We also return you to your place of accommodation on returning to Coober Pedy.
(Day 14): The Ghan (Fridays only) - Train Adventure to Alice Springs (overnight)
The Ghan - Outback Australian Train Journey, South Australia

Experience one of the most fascinating legendary train journeys of the world on The Ghan. The transcontinental journey from Darwin to Adelaide (or vica versa) covers 2979kms and fully accommodates passengers for the two day ride. Marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes; from the rusty reds of the MacDonnell Ranges surrounding a town called Alice, gateway to Ayers Rock and the Red Centre, then north to Tennant Creek, Katherine and the tropical splendour of Darwin. Guests are able to break (or start) their journey in Alice Springs and then rejoin The Ghan to travel on to Darwin or Adelaide (or vica versa). The Ghan first departed Adelaide for Alice Springs on 4 August 1929, it was always intended that it would one day travel through to Darwin. That dream became reality on 8 February 2004.

Note: The Ghan train stops about 40 kms west of Coober Pedy to allow passengers to board/disembark. Car transfers to/from the rail siding to Coober Pedy must be pre-arranged.
(Day 14 to 15) - 1 Night Accommodation in Alice Springs

Alice Springs, Australia's Oasis, is also known as the capital of the Outback and the most romantic country town in the world. It's where the Arrernte Aboriginal tribal group has lived for 20,000 years and where pioneer men and women gave "tough" a new meaning. Whilst on your vacation, take advantage of the many attractions available in Alice Springs. Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Alice Springs School of the Air, Central Australian Aviation Museum, the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, Alice Springs Telegraph Station, Old Stuart Town Gaol. Travel by coach or car to explore the unique scenery of Australia's Outback and its magnificent monolith - Uluru.
(Day 15) - Day Tour - Coach Tour from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock

Travel from Alice Springs, the heart of the Red Centre, via the MacDonnell Ranges to Uluru (Ayers Rock). The MacDonnell Ranges, consisting of sandstone peaks and gorges, are to the East and West of Alice Springs and are 400 miles long. Stop at the Australia Outback Camel Farm where you can ride a camel (own expense). Continue on to Ayers Rock Resort.
(Days 15 to 17) - 2 Nights Accommodation in Ayers Rock

Travel to the waterhole of Mutitjulu for a guided walk, viewing ancient cave paintings and learning about the Aboriginal legends of Kuniya Tjukurpa (Python Dreaming). Join the guided Mala Walk to learn the story of the Mala (Hare Wallaby) people who once lived at Uluru. See painted caves and learn of the region's geology and flora. As you tour the base of Uluru, visit Kantju Gorge, a waterhole and old hunting ground. Late in the day, watch the sunset over Uluru, admire the ever-changing colours of the monolith while the sun sinks below the horizon. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and canapes as the dusk deepens into night. Return to the Resort approximately 30 minutes after sunset.

The next morning, rise early and enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee as you witness Uluru (Ayers Rock) at sunrise and see the desert come to life. With the sun still climbing the morning sky, travel to Kata Tjuta (Olgas); a stop is made to view the immense scale of this formation which dominates the western skyline of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This remarkable formation of 36 domes is thought to have once been a single rock many times the size of Uluru (Ayers Rock). On arrival at Kata Tjuta, join a guided walk into Walpa (Olga) Gorge. Marvel at the sheer walls that flank you as you enter the gorge. Learn of the domes' formation and of the wildlife of the region. Some of the plants you will see here are so rare that they are only found among these rocky domes. Return to your resort late morning with the rest of the day free.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Scenic Flight to Live-Aboard Dive Boat

Transfer from Cairns Accommodation to Cairns airport to catch your twin-engine light aircraft for your amazing scenic flight over the reef to Lizard Island. You will be greeted on arrival and transferred to the Sleek and Stylish dive vessel to depart for the reef. This afternoon you will have the opportunity for two dives before departing in the late evening for Osprey Reef, in the Coral Sea. The dives may be at sites such as the famous Cod Hole and turquoise waters of the Ribbon Reefs.

Day 2 & 3: Diving Osprey Reef

Australia's Coral Sea reefs are renowned for crystal clear water with an average visibility in excess of 100 feet. Two days can be spent diving at remote Osprey Reef, including North Horn for an unforgettable Shark Dive. You can expect to see grey whalers, silvertips, reef sharks, occasional hammerheads, schooling barracuda, trevally, and other pelagics are common. The landscape is amazing with sheer walls laced with gorgonians, sea whips, and bright yellow soft corals rising from thousands of feet below.

Day 4: Dive Bougainville Reef or in the Ribbon Reefs

Depending on the weather and sea conditions you will dive the spectacular Bougainville Reef or perhaps return to the Ribbon Reefs to dive the sensational Steve's Bommie, Temple of Doom, Flare Point, and other spectacular dive sites. After dinner on Sunday evening we will cruise overnight back to Cairns.

Day 5: Arrive into Cairns

Arrive in Cairns early morning. A fabulous Breakfast will be served on board and transfers will be arranged. You will have the day free to explore Cairns.

Let the kids can play in the sandy edges and in the shallow waters while you lounge on the semi-shaded timber decks. For the kids, don't miss our on the Trinity Bay foreshore playground "Muddy" with equipment for all ages. For the older kids, stop off at the Skate Park to see some skaters and BMXers in action! Whether you decide to take a morning jog, fly a kite or just relax in the large grassy areas for some lunch you will surely enjoy the tropical lifestyle!
