Tasmania’s rugged, seemingly untouched landscape and mountainous surrounds lent itself as a perfect background character to the film. Its sun-kissed, golden mountains and shimmering coastline made huge fans of the the film’s stars, with producer Angie Fielder telling The Mercury, “Dev Patel [Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel] and Rooney Mara [The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo] are here for the first time and they’re blown away.” With increased attention, Tasmania is capturing more first-time visitors to Australia. You’ll spend 2 nights in the capital city of the island state of Tasmania. A bustling metropolis nestled among largely untouched land, you’ll be within walking distance of local restaurants, culture and arts. Hobart is the perfect starting point for your ultimate journey, a three day long leg of tours that takes you from Hobart to Launceston for Tasmanian nature experiences that seem a world away. Visit iconic Tasmania destinations by starting out on the stunning Tasman Peninsula. You’ll take in picturesque views from rock formations and lookouts and see Australia’s highest sea cliffs. Next, you’ll stop by the Tasmanian Devil “Unzoo”. This “inside-out” take on a traditional zoo experience provides a wildlife experience like no other zoo. You’ll bear witness to some of Australia’s native wildlife and plants roaming and interacting in their natural habitat. Finally, a Port Arthur Historic Site guided tour uncovers some of the grim history to the formerly known “inescapable prison”. Also included is a Harbour Cruise around the Isle of the Dead.

• The Tasman peninsula is home to one of Tasmania’s “Great Short Walks” that concludes at the rock formations Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen;
• The Tasmania Devil “Unzoo” puts the focus on wildlife, unencumbered by small, fenced cages like a traditional zoo;
• Your Port Arthur visit concludes with a cruise around the Harbour and the Isle of the Dead – a satellite island adjacent to Port Arthur used as a cemetery specifically for the former prison in the 1800’s!

Head East from Hobart traveling through quaint, seaside towns before arriving at Freycinet National Park, one of the first National Park’s in Tasmania. Among Freycinet’s rich, natural landscape you’ll see the Pink Granite Mountains that surround the Park’s sandy beaches and clear waters. You’ll then be guided to Wineglass Bay Lookout which offers unmatched views and prime photo opportunities. A multitude of walking trails are available to explore based on your preferred level of activity, but be sure to take the long route down to Wineglass Bay proper. Lonely Planet called this one of their “Best Beaches in Australia”. On your way out, you’ll stop at Devil’s Corner Winery where you can grab a bite to eat and of course, do some wine tasting.

The next day, you’ll spend some more time with Tasmania’s stunning natural landscape in Cradle Mountain National Park. You’ll travel through the charming mountain town of Sheffield, known as the “Town of Murals”, where huge murals on the sides of many buildings paint the town. Once you arrive in the Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area, you’ll have around 5 hours to explore the grounds. Choose longer or shorter routes, with a slightly more strenuous route being rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views atop Marion’s Lookout. On the way out, you’ll stop by Ashgrove Cheese Factory and sample some of its locally-made, tasty products.

• Be on the lookout for the Cradle wombats roaming in their natural habitat!

With a multi-city journey in Tasmania, you are truly experiencing parts of Australia most first or second time visitors never even see, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss the iconic highlights of mainland Australia.

Jet off to Sydney, one of Australia’s most famous cities, and get acquainted with the cosmopolitan city most notable for its iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour. An expert guide will take you through the inner workings of the architectural masterpiece, giving you the inside scoop on the controversy surrounding its construction and other details about the building. You’ll see many of the various performance halls located inside and stop in the glass-enclosed northern foyer, providing unique views of the Harbour and of course prime photo opportunities.

Sydney is the most visited tourist destination in Australia and for good reason. Your hotel in Sydney is convenient to nearby bars, restaurants, museums, local culture and more. Stop by the Royal Botanical Gardens for some true tranquility or walk along the Harbour and Sydney’s stunning waterfront and you’ll soon see why millions of visitors come to Sydney each year.

Spend your final nights in tropical paradise in Cairns. Cairns is a gateway to an Australian destination perhaps even more renowned than the Opera House – the Great Barrier Reef. If you wish, there are a plethora of optional tours that take you out to see the world’s largest living organism, whether your tastes run from quiet observation from the deck of a glass-bottom boat, or getting up-close and personal with a snorkeling excursion. Explore the local Marlin Jetty, Esplanade and Night Markets.
