Insider's Tip: Natural Wonders

Located at the Southern gateway to the Kimberley, Broome is a small town where bush meets the brush. Despite being a small town, it is full of history and character.

Go back 130 million years when you visit Gantheaume Point, home of dinosaur footprints visible during low tide. Nearby is Anastasia’s Pool; a hand built round pool made by a former lighthouse keeper for his wife who found relief for her arthritis in this pool. During negative times (A negative tide height indicates the water level will be below the average low water line) the Dutch Flying Boat wrecks are visible. These wrecks are evidence of the flying boats sunk by a Japanese air raid on Broome during WWII. If you are interested in bush walking, Minyirr Park has self guided walks that will take you through the bush and onto the beach, allowing you stunning panoramic views of Broome.

Insider's Tip: Pearl Industry History

Learn of Broome’s influence on the pearl industry.

Broome was once the centre of the world’s pearling industry. Homage is paid to those involved in establishing Broome in the pearl industry in the grassed area on Carnarvon Street with The Cultured Pearl and Hard Hat Diver statues. Visit the final resting place of over 900 pearl divers in the Japanese Cemetery. Learn about pearling by visiting a pearl farm or one of the numerous pearl showrooms throughout Broome. Or sail aboard a pearl lugger for a sunset cruise as you look for sea creatures and enjoy BBQ and drinks from a fully licensed bar (Beachloading requires passengers to get wet feet).

Take the Great North Eastern Highway (Route 1) east of Broome, for the four-and-a-half-hour journey across the Roebuck Plains to Fitzroy Crossing.

A must see while visiting Fitzroy Crossing is Geikie Gorge National Park. Geikie Gorge is situated at the junction of the Oscar and the Geikie Ranges. The mighty Fitzroy River has carved a 30 metre deep gorge into the remains of the ancient limestone barrier reef that existed here in the Devonian period.

When the Fitzroy is in full flood during the wet season it covers the whole national park. Those floods rise over 16 metres up the gorge walls and the continuous rise and fall of the water has left the bottom of the walls bleached white, an intriguing sight which makes Geikie Gorge very popular with photographers.
