Itinerary Details
(Days 1 to 3) - Self Drive - The Long Paddock, 3 Days / 2 Nights, New South Wales

The Long Paddock self-drive through New South Wales, Australia is a 600 km drive. This is a great drive to see and follow the old livestock routes that cattlemen used to use. Enjoy the great outdoors and countryside of New South Wales with this amazing self drive.

Day 1: Wilcannia

Stay overnight in Wilcannia, a history filled town. Be sure to get your rest for the beginning of the Long Paddock Self Drive. Stay 1 Night.

Day 2: Wilcannia to Hay (approx 7.5hrs drive)

Wilcannia / Ivanhoe: Begin the Long Paddock Self Drive from Wilcannia, a quiet city that once boasted as being one of the busiest inland ports of Australia. There is tons of history and architecture to explore in Wilcannia.

Ivanhoe / Booligal: Upon reaching Ivanhoe, be sure to trace the steps of the town’s heritage trail where you will spot 8 historic locations. These are all centrally located to the main street. This is a great opportunity to have lunch at the RSL.

Booligal / Hay: Visit what is left of the One Tree Hotel. This was a very popular stopping point for cattlemen in the old days. Drive past countless paddocks (enclosures for horses and livestock) and station style homesteads. Stop in the Duke of Ediburgh hotel for an afternoon refreshment and take in the vast open countryside and plains. Stay 1 Night.

Day 3: Hay to Deniliquin (approx 1.5hrs drive)

Hay / Booroorban: Continue on through the saltbush plain, some of the flattest terrain in Australia, to Hay. There are many things to do in Hay. This is an old pioneering town, with a wonderful goldrush history as well. Visit one of the many museums to experience and learn all about the history of Hay, New South Wales. See if you can spot the ARTback sculpture along the river. Shear Outback interpretive centre is one place where you can learn about the history and art of shearing. Stroll along Lachlan Street for a variety of lunch options. Booroorban / Deniliquin: Stop in Booroorban to visit the Royal Mail Hotel, ask about its history and check out the “Headless Horseman” painting in the bar. Booroorban is also a haven for bird lovers. Head south through Wanganella and Pretty Pine, the ARTback sculpture in Black Swamp is a must see. Stay 1 Night.

Day 4: Deniliquin to Moama (approx 1 hr drive)

Deniliquin: Truly soak up this town and take a stroll to enjoy the architecture, or venture off the beaten track for an afternoon hike in the forest. Drive up to the small rural town of Conargo to enjoy their 360 degree views of the sunset, then head back to Deniliquin for dinner at the Deniliquin RSL Club, a favorite of the locals.

Deniliquin / Mathoura: Deniliquin is known by the “Ute Capital”, so called because they have set numerous world records for most number of Ute’s in one location as well as for their annual Deni Ute Muster (held in October), a festival celebrating this interesting Australian vehicle. If you want to dive into region’s history, be sure to stop in the Peppin Heritage Centre. You can learn all about the ute as well as the local wool and sheep industries. Continue south to Mathoura.

Mathoura / Moama: Taste some of the local foods before heading north to Mathoura. Mathoura is home to Australia’s largest redgum forest, as well as a great locale for some fantastic fishing and birdwatching. Head south to Moama where you will conclude the Long Paddock Drive. Stay 1 Night. Continue your self drive onto your next Australian destination.
