Departing Darwin, travel across the Marrakai Plains and journey into World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, home to a profusion of birds and other native fauna. Covering some 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu is Australia’s largest national park. Continue by 4WD to Ubirr to see superbly preserved Aboriginal rock art. Located on the Arnhem Land escarpment, Ubirr has been added in its own right to the World Heritage List because of its anthropological and archaeological value. After enjoying lunch, you’ll join the fascinating Guluyambi Cruise along the East Alligator River with an Aboriginal guide. This is a wonderfully scenic cruise and serves as a superb introduction to the Aboriginal cultural context of the Northern Territory. As you cruise, keep a look out for the wide variety of wildlife that inhabits the area, including crocodiles. Your guide will provide interesting commentary along the way. Learn about the ancient culture and legends of the region. With special permission, at one point during the cruise, you’ll disembark the cruise for a short walk into Arnhem Land, (conditions permitting). An Aboriginal-owned region that’s mostly occupied by local Indigenous people, Arnhem Land is a place in which traditional Indigenous culture remains largely intact. After the walk, rejoin the cruise and return to the point of departure. Then continue your journey by land. Late this afternoon, you’ll stop in at Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre. Here, you have the opportunity to learn about the wildlife, seasonal changes, various animal groups and local Aboriginal and European history of the region. Fun interactive displays help to explain ecological processes that occur in the wetlands. The top floor of the centre commands superb views across the floodplains, especially during the late afternoon. Relax and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine while admiring the beautiful evening view out over the floodplains. Need to Know:
– Wear comfortable, enclosed rubber-soled shoes and comfortable clothing;
– Secure lockers will be provided to store your personal belongings;
– No cameras, phones, GoPros or other video and mobile devices are allowed on the climb;
– Children ages 8 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Children younger than 8 are not permitted on the climb;
– Maximum of 14 people per group.
Times:
The climb lasts approximately 3.5 hours. Climbs are available at dawn (limited departures), day, twilight or night.
