As part of your vacation self-drive Australia and explore our stunning landscapes, coastlines, regional towns and wildlife. Stop and meet the locals, maybe enjoy a counter meal at a local Aussie pub, or relax on the beach while sampling some takeaway fish & chips from the local deli or servo. During one of your rest stops try to spot a kangaroo, emu or even a Koala in the wild.

Please bring a valid American driver’s license with you and be aware that the Australians drives on the left hand side of the road.

Insider's Tip: Perth Zoo

Perth Zoo is Australia’s best small zoo and located just 5 minutes from the Perth CBD.

Touted as one of the most diverse zoos in the Southern Hemisphere, the Perth Zoo almost always has something new to see. The zoo is open year round from 9am to 5pm and entrance fees are as follows (all prices in AUD): $22 for adults & $11.30 for children. In addition to Keeper Talks, you can ride in the electric-powered zebra buggy, go on a free walking tour or ride on the zoo’s historical carousel. This Perth attraction is an excellent way to spend a day without spending a lot of money.

Getting There
By Bus: From Perth CBD Bus No. 30 and 31 stop right in front of the Zoo weekdays or weekends, leaving regularly from the Esplanade Bus-Port. Bus #34 stops behind the Zoo and leaves from the Wellington Street Bus-port. From the ‘Causeway’ (Victoria Park) Bus #730 and #731 stop at the Zoo. By Train: Currently, the easiest way to visit Perth Zoo by train is to transfer at the Esplanade Bus-port (Train Platform 1) to Bus # 31 (Bus Stand E4) which makes Perth Zoo one of its first stops. The bus stops right out front of the ticket office. The reverse applies when you want to go home.

Take an amazing scenic cruise to Fremantle along the beautiful Swan River, where you will be able to explore the Cappuccino Strip, Fishing Boat Harbour and the many sights and museums Fremantle has to offer.

On your cruise you’ll have the opportunity to learn about Perth, Freemantle, and the surrounding area through your knowledgeable captain’s expert live commentary. Tonight you’ll walk and dine down St Georges Terrace in the heart of Perth. Enjoy three delicious courses with a beverage to compliment in some of the finest venues in the city.

Starting at the Perth Town Hall, the traditional centre of town, and finishing in the King Street precinct, the tour lasts 3.5 in a fun, relaxed and sophisticated environment. This will truly be a mouth-watering night to remember.

Over the course of the evening, in a small group, you will visit 3 of the newer restaurants to indulge in an entrée, main course and desert, plus drinks, amongst historic settings including the Public Trustee building, St Georges house and the home of Perth’s first Bishop, Matthew Hale.

While strolling between venues, you will be guided to interested spaces to discover art, heritage buildings and stories of some influential people in Perth’s history before arriving for another course prepared by some of Perth’s best chef’s.

Optional Tour (Not Included) - Pinnacles Day Tour

The extraordinary ancient rock formations that make up the Pinnacles are located about a three-hour drive north of Perth near the coastal town of Cervantes. Join on a guided walk through the Pinnacles desert and marvel at the limestone pillars created by forces of nature.

After stopping at Caversham Wildlife Park in the Swan Valley to view koalas and hand feed kangaroos, travel to the lobster fishing town of Cervantes for lunch. Stop at the Lobster Shack for an informative talk about the lobster industry, followed by a self-guided tour through the purpose built factory.

Then it’s onwards to the mystical Pinnacles Desert for an easy paced walk through the fascinating landscape where you will be in awe at the sheer size and number of these spires. Afterwards enjoy a thrilling experience of sand boarding and 4-wheel driving over the vast sand dunes of Lancelin. Full Day Tour.

(Day 2) - Self Drive from Perth to Kalbarri

Today you will embark on your self-drive adventure along the Coral Coast of Western Australia. Drive time from Perth to Kalbarri is approximately 6 hours (370 miles).

Make your journey to the beginning of your adventure by joining the Indian Ocean Drive north of Perth. Starting in the coastal playground of Lancelin, it leads you to one of the most unique landscapes on Earth, the Pinnacles Desert of Nambung National Park.

Picnic at the Pinnacles or grab lunch at the fishing village of Cervantes.

The last stretch of the Indian Ocean Drive leads you to the windsurfing capital of Geraldton. From here, you’re just one hour and 45 minutes away from the ultimate outback coast playground in Kalbarri National Park.

This park is most well-known for abundant wildflowers, the Gorges of the Murchison River, and ocean coastline. Your dive to Kalbarri Town travels through the very center of the Kalbarri National Park with signposted turnoffs to the river gorges and scenic attractions. The park is managed by the Department of Conservation and Land Management and interpretive materials describing the region may be collected at the Park Ranger’s Office or at the Kalbarri Tourist Bureau. Turn left at the riverfront. As you enter Kalbarri, the Kalbarri Tourist Bureau is 1 km on your left and they are happy to answer any questions you may have. Alternatively, you may phone them on (08) 9937 1104.

Get up close and personal with the wild dolphins of Monkey Mia!

Monkey Mia is one of the world’s most reliable meeting places for dolphins. It is also the only place in Australia where dolphins come daily, not seasonally. There is a 99% chance that they will visit.

A small number of people are selected at random to enter the shallows and feed the dolphins, under ranger supervision. If you attend the second or third feed of the day, when the group sizes are generally smaller, you will have a better chance of being selected.

You may want to visit the Western Australian Museum in Geraldton while you are there. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, the museum celebrates the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Mid West region.
