Insider's Tip: Barangaroo

Sydney’s newest waterfront suburb is a spectacular urban renewal project transforming the docklands into a culturally rich parkland and entertainment precinct.

At the northern end sits Barangaroo Reserve, a sprawling parkland offering spectacular views across the harbor, an entirely Australian native garden, walking and cycling trails, tranquil coves and peaceful picnic spots. Join a walking tour through the picturesque reserve and learn about the different plants and their uses, led by a knowledgeable Aboriginal guide.

To the south, world class dining and retail spaces featuring award-winning architecture sit alongside a previously inaccessible harbor foreshore. Explore over 30 restaurants and bars, with a scenic restaurant strip along the waterfront Wulugul Walk featuring Sydney’s hottest eateries. Graze on exquisite share plates from the Turkish mezze bar Anason, or treat your sweet tooth to the pastries from Bourke Street Bakery.

The precinct is named after Barangaroo, an indigenous Cammeraygal clan leader from the Eora Nation living around the north harbor at the time of European colonization. She was revered as a free-spirited and powerful Aboriginal woman, proud of her spirituality and culture. She refused to partake in the early European settler way of life, and when she finally visited settlers with her husband Bennelong, she ‘dressed up’ painted in white clay with a bone septum through her nose.

Just as Barangaroo held tightly to her indigenous roots, so does Barangaroo Reserve. This vibrant harborside precinct is a testament to the harmonizing blend of urban renewal and nature.
